A TEENAGER has completed a 10,000ft skydive to raise money for prostate cancer, a cause close to her heart.

18-year-old Eleanor Mawson, who last month celebrated receiving her A-level results, completed the tandem skydive at Bridlington Skydiving Centre to raise money for the charity in honour of her grandad, Ronald Hewson, who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Eleanor, of Acklam, said that she wanted to help raise money to fight the disease and help her grandad.

“I wanted to help the cause and I think my grandad was really happy that I’d done it,” she said.

“He was happy I had chosen to do something for him and that I got to experience something for myself at the same time.”

Eleanor was given a short training session before she was taken up in a plane to about 10,000ft. It was about 7,00ft up, she said, that the nerves began to kick in.

She said: “When we got to about 7,000ft the nerves kicked in and I began to feel really, really nervous.

“I think when we were sat on the edge of the plane getting ready to jump was the most nerve-wracking part, but everything else was fantastic. The jump itself was amazing.”

The jump reaches speeds in excess of 120mph covering about 5,000ft in 30 seconds before the instructor opens the main parachute. Eleanor has raised almost £600 in total for Prostate Cancer UK and the former Malton Sixth Form student is now looking forward to studying marine zoology at Bangor University in Wales later this year.
