A NEW project designed to help people get fit, meet new faces and still pursue a passion for the beautiful game - just perhaps at a slower pace - is being launched this week.

Walking football is exactly as it sounds – a standard game of indoor football where participants can only walk, instead of run.

The aim is to help adults get fit and maintain an active lifestyle, no matter what their age, weight, fitness levels or ability.

Run at Malton Community Sports Centre (MCSC), the project has been proven to be a fundamental tool in helping older players, as well as novices, back into the game and in addressing health issues such as lowering heart rate, blood pressure, cholesterol and fat levels, whilst increasing mobility, muscle, cardio fitness and a healthy mind.

Walking football also offers social benefits. Participants can meet new people, socialise during the game and over a cup of tea after the game, interact in small or large groups and help issues of isolation and loneliness.

Jay Rowley, Community Sports Manager at MCSC, said: “Ideally the project is aimed at over 50’s, but we are committed to supporting as many people within our community as possible. We are happy to encourage participation by younger players with health issues, injury problems and via GP referrals”.

The Sports Centre, owned and managed by Malton School, will be hosting three taster sessions in the run up to Christmas.

Starting on Friday, December 4, 5-6pm in the main sports hall, players are asked to wear shorts / tracksuit bottoms, a t-shirt (possibly favourite team kit) and sports trainers. There are plans to offer a second block of sessions either in the day time, later evening or weekend slot from January.

Initially the sessions will be supported by North Riding County FA, via funding from the Football Association, meaning costs will be just £1 per session. This includes a cup of tea or coffee after the game.
