NORTH YORKSHIRE trainer Bryan Smart has a high opinion of Fendale, who puts his reputation on the line at Ayr this afternoon after coming up short at York last month.

The juvenile, who had won his first two races, was stepped up in class on his latest start on Knavesmire when tackling the Gimcrack Stakes, in which he finished seventh of the nine runners.

Fendale reverts to his dual-winning distance of five furlongs in this afternoon’s Harry Rosebery Stakes and is fancied to run a big race in this £40,000 Listed contest. Paul Mulrennan has the mount.

The Enable Scotland Diamond Anniversary Nursery Handicap has attracted a smart field and Son Of Africa makes ample appeal from the Henry Candy yard.

The youngster has won two of his three starts and showed a really good attitude when coming out on top in a hot race at Goodwood last time out. There may be more to come from him and he should give Danny Tudhope a good ride.

Those horses which fail to make the cut in the Ayr Gold and Silver Cups end up in the William Hill Bronze Cup. It is no easier to solve than the other two head-scratchers.

Perhaps the answer to today’s problem will be Expose, who underlined his wellbeing with a narrow win over Pea Shooter at Doncaster. He has a 5lb penalty to overcome, but is expected to go well in a wide-open race. The step up from five furlongs to six will not cause him any problems as he has won over the longer distance.

Richard Fahey saddles Henrytheaeroplane in the opening British Stallion Studs Maiden Stakes.

The colt has shown a good level of ability to finish in the frame in all his three races. His winning turn can not be delayed much longer.

Mick Easterby sent out Boris Grigoriev to win at this meeting 12 months ago and the gelding is back for more in the Vokera & Graham The Plumbers Merchant Handicap.

The five-year-old has been restricted to only two outings this season and will need to take a step forward to win this competitive handicap. But the fact Easterby has decided to send him to Scotland may be significant.

John Quinn, pictured, took the opening honours at Ayr yesterday with Moonlightnavigator and the Norton trainer has good prospects of adding to his score with Moidore in the Bam Properties Ltd Handicap.

A winner at Newcastle in May, Moidore finished a respectable fifth at Ascot on his recent comeback outing. That outing should have put him spot-on for this staying test. Victory would earn him a tilt at next month’s Cesarewitch Handicap. He carries the nap vote.

At Newbury, John Gosden can play a starring role with two juvenile winners - Snoano (3.35), the mount of Paul Hanagan and Timba (4.05).
