SIMON DYSON was forced into withdrawing from the Wales Open just before reaching the first tee.
The York-born ace, who had returned to the world’s leading 100 golfers for the first tine in more than a year after his runner-up spot in last week’s KLM Open in Holland, was looking to build on that success.
But after strenuous practice on Tuesday and Wednesday, he suffered a back spasm while undergoing a chipping session shortly before his early afternoon first round tee-off time yesterday.
The world number 97 was unable to take a full swing and so, rather than risk longer-term damage, he withdrew from the event at the Celtic Manor resort complex.
With the Ryder Cup taking place next week, the 36-year-old Dyson will have close on a fortnight to recover before the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
