MALTON ace Ian Austermuhle had the edge on his fellow Beta rider Guy Kendrew to take the main spoils at Guisborough District Motor Club’s trial on Sunday.

The event, held at Aislaby Quarries, near Whitby, included the first round of the East Yorks Championship, and drew a huge entry of 103 riders.

Austermuhle and Kendrew, of Faceby, who are both contesting this season’s British Trials Championship, fought for the expert class win, with the former taking it by three marks.

Kendrew produced a cracking first lap to lead by one mark after Austermuhle failed the awkward gully climb of section three, but then the Malton man fought back with unpenalised rides on the massive rock step of section six where Kendrew hit trouble on his second lap, losing five marks.

Despite glorious weather on the day, the going was slippy but the experienced Dave Wardell, from Pickering, made it look easy, as he grabbed victory in a harder-than-usual clubman ‘B’ class, holding off Carlton’s Alan Maynard with York’s Mark Butler third.

Kirkbymoorside starlet Jack Peace needed all the power his little Gasser could produce to nail the climbs and big steps of this venue.

He won youth ‘A’ category, and his score of 39 marks would have placed him midfield in a strong line-up of expert riders.
