SALISBURY and Carlisle serve up a veritable feast of midweek action, with COMBATIVE taken to defy his relative inexperience with victory in the feature Whitsbury Manor Stud Bibury Cup at the first-named venue.

Trained by Amanda Perrett, this son of Sinndar hails from the family of Reams Of Verse and Elmaamul and has only had two starts to date, kicking off with an authoritative victory on the Lingfield all-weather in April.

The form of that maiden has not worked out brilliantly but Combative could do little more than win with something in hand and his starting handicap mark of 89 suggests the handicapper was reasonably impressed.

However, he was unable to make his presence felt at Sandown on his handicap bow, with a slow early gallop over 10 furlongs hardly playing into the hands of what appears to be a horse who will stay further.

Primitivo, the winner, has since enhanced the form with victory in the King George V Stakes and with a switch up to a mile and a half now brought into play, Combative is taken to make the most of a 2lb drop in his rating with Jim Crowley at the helm.

STORM AHEAD similarly showed up well behind a Royal Ascot winner at Doncaster and is one to watch in the Molson Coors Handicap.

The three-year-old struck gold at the third time of asking for Marcus Tregoning last year, finally getting his head in front in a Lingfield maiden in December.

Tregoning's horses were not quite firing early in the campaign, which explains why Storm Ahead did not return until lining up at Doncaster earlier this month, when he bumped into Britannia hero Defrocked.

Much like at Ascot, Defrocked drifted across the track on Town Moor, with Storm Ahead one of those who found his run compromised by the winner.

It is hard to say how much closer he would have been but Storm Ahead is expected to improve plenty for that outing and can reverse form with second-placed Next Stage. Royston Ffrench rides today's nap selection.

Carlisle stages its biggest day of the year and GLENALMOND, ridden by Dougie Costello, can take a surprise victory in the bookies.com Carlisle Bell Handicap.

On his best form, Karl Burke's charge would be all over the winner as he once boasted a rating of 107 – but he has been on the slide since being beaten just a length by Muhaarar in the 2014 Gimcrack.

The four-year-old was highly tried last term but even a lengthy break over the summer could not reignite his season and his 2015 campaign closed with a poor run at Doncaster.

There was little to recommend him in his first two starts this year either but a recent trip to Ripon showed a modicum of ability still remains as he finished fifth.

Now on his lowest ever mark of 82 and with a visor applied, Glenalmond might just be capable of getting his head in front for the first time since beating Prince of Wales's hero My Dream Boat in July 2014.

PLANE SONG ran out a cosy winner at Thirsk and can follow up in the totepool Cumberland Plate Handicap under Darryll Holland.

A winner for Sir Michael Stoute last June, he changed hands for just 16,000 guineas last autumn and made reasonable progress in two starts for Alan Swinbank before coming good last week.

He could be a shade better than the official winning margin of half a length suggests – and he will need to be to defy his 6lb penalty.

ETERNALLY, ridden by Robert Havlin, can make it three wins from three and handle a jump up to Listed class in the ebfstallions.com "Eternal" Fillies' Stakes.

She impressed with a handicap win on her return at Nottingham earlier this month and looks a likely improver.

SUMMER CHORUS can lift Bath's Pommery Champagne Handicap, while PRENDERGAST HILL can be the star of the show in the 32Red On The App Store Handicap at Kempton.

UNCLE PERCY can strike for Ben Pauling in the second division of the Alleys General Haulage Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race at Worcester.
